"As for myself, after school I also joined Laing and Mather and started an apprenticeship in the seed trade at the age of 14 years.  10/6d (52 1/2p) per week for a minimum of 48 hours.  In 1942 I joined the Royal Navy and trained as a wireless operator.  In 1943 I joined HMS Belfast in convoy escort duties to N. Russia, America and the Mediterranean".

"I was in **** and served in the **** 'Black Prince' and the 'Sheffield'.  I was in the Scharnhorst action, and the Normandy Landings.  I then joined a sloop HMS Alacrity and went to the Far East to join the American Fleet.  I was in Hong Kong two days after the end of the war and at the signing of the Peace Treaty in Tokyo Bay.  Followed by a spell on the **** I was on this ship for 9 months without a single complete night ashore!  The ship was going to New Zealand but regrettably I was put ashore in Sydney as my demob was long overdue.  Not getting to New Zealand was one of my biggest disappointments as I would have loved to have met Uncle Davy (David Cresser) and family".

" After the war I returned to Kelso to finish my apprenticeship (still on the same money) and took up playing rugby.  I was in Kelso 1st XV and played all the top Scottish Clubs plus tours to London and Northern Ireland.  I moved to London and played for London Scottish 1st and 2nd XV and played against top English clubs plus tours to scotland and France.  I moved to the West Country in 1954 and married Barbara the following year".

"An amusing memory of my schooldays was when a piano fell on me.  When they lifted it I was found to have a compound fractured leg.  The one and only town ambulance was out on call so they had to push me to hospital in the police drunks barrow!"
